Isla Holbox is a 36-kilometer island off the northern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula. There are no cars, no ATMs beyond the center, and no paved roads. The beaches are shallow, warm, and very different in character from Cancún's Hotel Zone.
Getting there from Cancún
The journey has two legs. First, travel from Cancún to Chiquila — the ferry departure town. ADO buses run from Cancún bus terminal to Chiquila (2.5 hours, $250–300 MXN). From Chiquila, the ferry to Holbox takes 25–30 minutes and costs approximately $200 MXN each way. Total one-way journey: 3–3.5 hours.
Is it worth the trip for a day?
Honestly: a day trip to Holbox is long (3+ hours each way, 6+ hours total in transit) and you'll have 4–5 hours on the island if you take an early departure. It's most rewarding for travelers who want a genuinely different experience — slow pace, no motor vehicles, bioluminescent plankton at night (which you won't see on a day trip). For maximum value, stay one or two nights. For a day trip, the value is high specifically during whale shark season.
Whale shark season (June–September)
Isla Holbox is the most accessible location in the world for swimming with whale sharks — the largest fish in the ocean. The sharks aggregate off the northern coast from June through September to feed on fish eggs. Boat tours depart from Holbox to the feeding area (45–60 minutes offshore). Cost: $80–120 USD per person including equipment. This is the primary reason to make the day trip worth it.
What to do on the island
Playa Holbox is a long, shallow beach with warm water and soft sand. Renting a golf cart is the most practical way to reach the isolated eastern beaches. Flamingos are visible at the Yalahao Lagoon on the back side of the island (bring binoculars). The town center has several very good seafood restaurants — the lobster pizza at Hotel Villas Flamingos is consistently well-reviewed.
Practical details
No ATMs beyond the town center — bring cash. The island is all unpaved roads — sandals and flip-flops are appropriate. Mosquitoes are present at dusk — bring repellent. Check ferry schedules before departure from Cancún — the last boat back to Chiquila leaves at around 7pm and missing it means staying the night.
