Río Secreto is an underground river and cave system located 13 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen — about 1 hour from Cancún by car or bus. It's the most accessible cave experience in the region that doesn't require diving certification, and the cave formations are some of the best preserved in the Yucatán.
What the experience involves
The standard tour (2.5 hours) takes small groups (maximum 8 people) through 1.5 kilometers of the river cave system. Most of the route is waded on foot (water depth 0.5–1.5 meters) with occasional sections where you swim. The cave contains stalactites, stalagmites, crystal formations, and a freshwater river throughout. No diving required, but you will get completely wet. Wet suits are provided. Cave temperature: a constant 24°C.
What makes it different from cenotes
Cenotes are sinkholes — entry points to the underground system from above. Río Secreto is an actual river cave exploration — you follow the water flow through the cave, with the ceiling above you rather than open sky. The scale of the formations is larger than most cenotes because the cave is longer and less visited. When the guide turns off the lights, it's genuinely pitch black.
Getting there from Cancún
Río Secreto is 60 kilometers south of Cancún on Highway 307. By car: 50–60 minutes. By public transport: ADO bus to Playa del Carmen (45 minutes, $100–140 MXN), then a taxi or colectivo 13 kilometers south toward the Xcaret turnoff.
Booking and pricing
Book directly through the Río Secreto website — admission is $75–95 USD per adult. The price includes the full cave tour with a bilingual guide, wet suit, and water shoes. Book in advance — group sizes are capped and popular time slots fill up days ahead.
Practical considerations
Remove all jewelry and accessories before the tour. No non-waterproof phones or cameras allowed in the cave (the site photographer takes photos throughout the tour, available for purchase). Wear a swimsuit under the wetsuit. The cave tour involves walking on uneven rock surfaces — those with mobility issues should confirm suitability before booking.
