Most visitors to Cancún know one bus: the R-1 along Kukulcán Boulevard. Cancún's actual public transit network covers the entire city and is how 900,000 residents get to work, school, and back. Understanding it makes the city significantly more accessible and saves considerable money.
The bus network — beyond the R-1
Cancún's public buses operate on numbered route system. The R-1 (Hotel Zone to Centro) gets all the tourist attention, but several other routes are useful for visitors:
R-2: Runs from El Centro through the city's residential neighborhoods to the bus terminal (CAME). Useful for reaching the ADO terminal for day trip buses to Chichén Itzá, Cobá, and Tulum.
R-15: Connects El Centro to Puerto Morelos and points south — useful for reaching the Ruta de los Cenotes entry point at Puerto Morelos.
All city buses: 14 pesos flat fare. Cash only. Pay the driver when you board.
Colectivos (shared vans)
Colectivos are 15-passenger vans that run fixed routes but stop on request — essentially shared taxis on a fixed path. They're faster than buses, slightly more expensive (18–25 pesos per ride), and cover routes the bus network doesn't. The main colectivo terminal in Cancún is near the CAME bus terminal. Colectivos to Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum depart from here — significantly cheaper than ADO buses for the same destinations.
Colectivo fare from Cancún to Playa del Carmen: approximately $60 MXN (versus $100–140 MXN for ADO). Journey time is similar or slightly faster. Luggage space is limited.
The ADO bus terminal (CAME)
The main intercity bus terminal is the Central de Autobuses de Mexico (CAME) on Av. Tulum in El Centro. From here, ADO and affiliated companies serve Chichén Itzá, Cobá, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Mérida, Valladolid, and most other destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula. Booking tickets in advance through the ADO app or website saves queuing time and guarantees your preferred departure time.
Taxis and ride apps
As covered in the Hotel Zone guide — Uber and inDrive are the best value taxi alternatives in El Centro, typically $30–60 MXN for most intracity trips. Street taxis in El Centro are metered — unlike the Hotel Zone's zone-rate system — which makes them more straightforward for El Centro navigation.
Getting to the airport
The ADO airport express bus runs from the Hotel Zone terminal and CAME to CUN Airport every 30 minutes for approximately $9 USD one way — the cheapest airport transfer option. Uber from El Centro to CUN: $80–120 MXN (15–20 minutes without traffic). From the Hotel Zone: $15–22 USD via Uber.
